Crochet Sweetheart Tote - Heart Granny Square Bag Tutorial + Pattern
Hey!
The Sweetheart Tote is a cute and practical bag that is equally fun and simple to make. This pattern will teach you to make the heart granny square and then help you make the granny square big enough for the heart tote, assisting adjustments along the way.
Materials:
Yarn – Weight-3 acrylic yarn in red and white (approx. 100gms each)
Hook – 4mm hook
Scissors
Yarn needle
Measuring Tape (optional)
You can use this pattern with any type of yarn with the recommended hook size.
Abbreviations:
mr – magic ring
st/sts – stitch/stitches
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
tr – treble crochet
sk st - skip stitch
sl st – slip stitch
shell - 3dc in same space
ch1-sp/ch2-sp - chain1 space/ chain2 space
Heart Granny Square(x2):
In Red:
Magic Ring
Round 1: Ch3, 2 dc, *[ch2, 3 dc] x 3, ch2, join on top of ch3 - (12 dc)
Sl st to middle of shell, ch1
Round 2: 8 dc in next ch2-sp, ch1, sc in next ch2-sp, ch1, sk st, [2sc, ch1, 2sc in same st], ch1, sc in next ch2-sp, ch1, 8 dc in next ch2-sp, ch1, sl st to middle of shell - (22 sts)
In White:
Work into Back Loops only for this round.
Round 3:
Join yarn in the corner ch1-sp, sc in next st, hdc, dc, trc, ch2, dc, hdc, sc in next four st, ch2, sc in next four st, hdc into the joining space from last round, sc in next four st, ch2, sc in next four st, hdc, dc, ch2, trc, dc, hdc, sc in the place where you joined the yarn, join on top of the first sc - (28 sts)
Round 4:
Ch3, 2 dc in same sp as ch3, ch1, sk3, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, sk3, 3dc, ch1 , [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, 3dc into the top of hdc, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, sk2, 3dc, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, sl st on top of ch3 - (12 shells - 36 sts)
Round 5:
sl st 3 to reach the ch1-sp, [ch3, 2dc] into ch1-sp, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, 3dc into next ch2-sp, ch1, 3dc into next ch2-sp, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp... (16 shells - 48 dc)
Continue making shells and corners till the end of the round
Join the red yarn.
In Red:
Round 6:
Ch3, 2 dc in same sp as ch3, ch1, sk3, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, sk3, 3dc, ch1 , [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, 3dc into the top of hdc, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, sk2, 3dc, ch1, [3dc, ch2, 3dc] into next ch2-sp, ch1, sl st on top of ch3 - (20 shells - 60 sts)
In White:
Round 7: Repeat round 6 - (24 shells - 72 sts)
Round 8: Repeat round 6 - (28 shells - 84 sts)
In Red:
Round 9: Repeat round 6 - (32 shells - 96 sts)
In White:
Round 10: Repeat round 6 - (36 shells - 108 sts)
Round 11: Repeat round 6 - (40 shells - 120 sts)
In Red:
Round 12: Repeat round 6 - (44 shells - 132 sts)
Border:
In Red:
Start working from the top left or right corner.
sc into one of the corners holding both the corners together and working into both the corners.
*sc on top of every dc, working into both the dc on the front and the back panel, sc in ch1-sp
Repeat from * till you reach the corner.
[sc, ch1, sc] in corner.
*sc on top of every dc, working into both the dc on the front and the back panel, sc in ch1-sp
Repeat from * till you reach the corner.
[sc, ch1, sc] in corner.
*sc on top of every dc, working into both the dc on the front and the back panel, sc in ch1-sp
Repeat from * till you reach the corner.
sc in corner.
Strap:
In Red:
We will have two straps, one on the front and the other on the back.
R1: Choose the shell on which you want the strap to be on the right and join the yarn in the ch1-sp on the right to that shell, make a hdc in the same space.
hdc on top of all the three dc of the shell, hdc in the next ch1-sp, ch1, turn.
R2: hdc into each st - (5hdc)
Repeat R2 as many times.
Make as many rows as you want to get the desired strap length.
I made till R54 and it measures about 19 inches. Join onto the top of the shell on the left of the panel at similar distance from the corner with sl sts.
Repeat the same on the other side to make another strap
