How to Crochet a Bow Bookmark for Beginners | Crochet Bookmark | Free Pattern + Tutorial
Hello!
This little bow bookmark is one of those small things that just makes you smile ππ
It’s quick to make, super beginner-friendly, and adds a soft, handmade charm to your reading routine. Think of it as a tiny hug between the pages π§Ά✨π
There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out on this link.
Let's get started!
Materials:
- Yarn – Weight-3 acrylic yarn (less than 50 gms)
- Hook – 3mm & 2mm hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
- Piece of Cardboard (2inch wide)
You can use this pattern with any type of yarn with the recommended hook size
Abbreviations:
st/sts – stitch/stitches
ch – chain
sk - skip
sc - single crochet
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch
inc – increase
hdc - half double crochet
trc/tr - treble crochet
Pattern
Part 1:
- Ch 23
- sk 1st ch, in 2nd ch: sc
- Work across:
- hdc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc
- sl st, sl st, sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc, hdc
- In last ch: 3 sc in same st
- Continue along the other side of the chain:
- hdc in next st (i.e., 2nd from the 3sc), hdc, dc, dc, tr, 2 dc, hdc, sc
- sl st, sl st, sc, hdc, 2 dc, tr, 2 dc, 2 hdc
- 2 sc in the last st
- sl st to the first sc. Ch 1, leave a long tail (150cms-170cms) and fasten off.
Part 2:
- Ch 16
- Sk 1st ch, then work:
- sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc, sl st
- sc, hdc, dc, tr, dc, hdc, sc
- Join with sl st, ch1. Fasten off. Don’t leave a long tail.
Assembly:
- Using the long tail from Part 1, find the center of the bow and pull the yarn from back to front through the middle.
- Place the smaller piece (Part 2) behind the Part 1 in the center.
- Using the long yarn tail left from Part 1, wrap it tightly around the center where both pieces overlap. This creates the classic “bow” look and secures both parts together.
- After wrapping and securing the bow, bring the yarn tail to the top of the bow, right where the two parts are joined.
- Insert your hook through the top of the joint (center wrap), from one side to the other, and pull the yarn tail through to bring it to the back (as shown in the image).
- From here, with a smaller hook (2mm hook) chain 65–70 (or however long you want the bookmark tail to be).
- Once your chain is complete, fasten off.
- Take a piece of cardboard that’s about 2 inches wide (smaller and wider based on how long you want the tassel to be)
- Wrap a new piece of yarn around the 2-inch side of the cardboard 15 to 20 times. I wrapped mine around 15-17 times, but you can adjust based on how thick you want your tassel to be.
- Once you're done wrapping, cut the yarn, leaving the loops on the cardboard as they are.
- Take the long yarn tail from the bow (the end of your bookmark chain) and thread it through the top of the loops and tie it tightly at the top. This will secure the tassel to your bookmark.
- Cut the other end of the tassels with scissors or blade.
- Use another small piece of yarn to tie a knot around the top of the tassel, about 1 cm below where it’s attached to the chain. This creates the little "head" of the tassel.
- Bring in the excess yarn through the center.
- Trim the ends to make them even and neater, and your tassel is done!
And with that, you’re done making your bow bookmark!
I'd love to see if you make one of your own.
