How to Crochet a Tulip Cardigan | Crochet Cute Cardigan Tutorial + Pattern for Beginners ✨

Hey! 

The Tulip Cardigan is a soft, floral-inspired layering piece that feels like wearing a bit of spring. Designed with gentle texture and flowing stitches that mimic blooming tulips, it’s light, breathable, and perfect for warmer days or breezy evenings. The fit is adjustable so you can make it in whatever size like! It’s one of those pieces that feels special to make and even more special to wear, whether you’re dressing it up or cozying in.

Materials:

• Yarn – Weight - 2 Acrylic Yarn
  • Off White - 200 gms
  • Pink - 100 gms
  • Green - 50 gms
• Hook – 4mm
• Scissors
• Measuring Tape
• Stitch Markers
• Buttons
• Yarn needle
• Pins
• Needle

You can use any yarn with the recommended hook size.

Abbreviations:

st – stitch

ch – chain

hdc – half double crochet

inc – increase (2 stitches into the same space)

dc – double crochet

dec - decrease

sk st - skip stitch

sc - single crochet

sp - space

sl st – slip stitch

ch1-sp/ch2-sp - chain 1 space/chain 2 space

Special Stitches:

puff st – puff stitch (yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop 3 times, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook)

v-st - (dc, ch2, dc) in same stitch

Pattern:

The Back Panel:

In Main Color (Off-White)

Ch 80 or any chain length but it has to be a multiple of 6 + 2.

In my case, 78+2.

Row 1:

• dc in 2nd ch from hook and in every ch across - (79 dc)
• Fasten off.
• You should have one less st than the number of chains in your foundation chain. In my case, 79 dc.

In Green (Stems):

Row 2:

• Join green yarn to the top of the first dc (not on the last dc).
• ch1, *[sc in same st, ch2, sk2, v-st, ch2, sk2]
• Repeat from * across
• (13 v-sts, 14 sc total)
• Fasten off.
• You should have a single crochet as the last st.

v-st is [dc, ch2, dc] in same st. Check ‘Special Stitches’ section above.

In Pink (Tulips):

Row 3:

• Join pink yarn to top of first sc from Row 2
• Ch 1, dc in same st
• *[Ch1, puff st] x 3 inside each v-st space.
• Repeat from * into every v-st space.
• dc in last sc
• (13 sets of 3 puff sts in total)
• Fasten off.

In Off-White:

Row 4:

• Join white yarn to top of last dc of Row 3 (not the first dc)
• Ch1, dc in same st.
• Ch1, skip next ch1 space, dc in next ch1 space which is the one between the two puff sts, ch1
• * [dc, ch1] into every ch1-sp
• Repeat across
• Don’t make a dc in the last ch1-sp
• End with dc in last dc
• (40 dc total)
• Ch1, turn.

Row 5:

• Dc in each dc and in each ch1-sp across - (79 dc)
• You should have the same number of dc as you had in Row 1.
• Fasten off

Repeat the following Rows 2–5 till you get the desired length.

• Row 6: Repeat Row 2 (Green)
• Row 7: Repeat Row 3 (Pink)
• Row 8: Repeat Row 4 (Off-White)
• Row 9: Repeat Row 5 (Off-White)

Continue in this pattern until Row 33, ending after the 8th tulip row (i.e., 8 pink flower rows) to achieve the length of cardigan I made which is 16 inches.

Make sure you always end on the double crochet Row.

The Sleeves (x2):

The sleeve follows the exact same pattern as the back panel, with just a smaller starting chain. Instead of chaining 80, begin with a chain of 62 (which follows the multiple of 6 + 2 rule).

The Front Panel:

The front has two pieces and each start in the same way. The width of each should be approximately half as that of the back panel.

Take the above chart as a guide but you might have to tweak it in case it is too small or big.

I made a chain of 38 and it was about 10 inches.
