How to Crochet the Oceira Bag | Granny Square Bag Tutorial + Free Pattern

Hey!

The Oceira Bag is made using a beautifully textured granny square called the Front Post Granny or the Trebling Granny Square. It’s beginner-friendly, fun to assemble, and totally customizable.

There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out here.

Materials:

  • Yarn – Weight-2 acrylic yarn in two or three colors
  • Hook – 4mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Measuring Tape (optional)
You can use this pattern with any type of yarn with the recommended hook size.

Abbreviations:

  • mr – magic ring
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • trc/tr - treble crochet
  • ch1-sp/ch2-sp - ch1 space/ch2 space
  • Special Stitches:
  • fptrc – front post treble crochet
    • yarn over twice, insert your hook from right to left around the center stitch of the 3-dc shell from the second-last round, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook),
    • [yarn over, pull through 2 loops] × 3.

Pattern:

You can change colors in any round or not change colors at all.

Ch1 in the starting of every round doesn’t count as a st.

When using the same yarn in the next round you can either sl st to the next ch-2 corner space or fasten off and reattach the yarn in the corner to avoid bulk.

Round 1(In White):

  • Start with a magic ring or ch4 and join to form a ring, ch1.
  • [3 dc, ch 2] x 4 into the ring.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc - (4 shells or 12 dc total)

Round 2:

  • sl st to the next ch-2 corner space or fasten off and reattach the yarn in the corner, ch1
  • Work ([3 dc, ch2, 3 dc] into corner, ch1) x 4
  • Join with sl st - (8 shells or 24 dc total)

Round 3 (In Blue):

  • sl st to the next ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • * Work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in corner, ch 1.
  • Work [dc, fptrc into central st from R1, dc] in ch-1 space, ch 1
  • Repeat from *
  • Join with sl st - (12 sets or 36 sts total)

Round 4:

  • sl st to the next ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • Work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch1] in each corner, and [3 dc, ch 1] in each ch-1 space.
  • Join with sl st - (16 shells or 48 dc total)

Round 5 (In White):

  • sl st to the next ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • Work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch1] in each corner, and [dc, fptrc, dc, ch 1] in each ch-1 space.
  • Join with sl st - (20 sets or 60 sts total)
  • Check “Special Stitches” for fptrc.

Round 6:

  • Sl st to the next ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • Work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] in each corner, and [3 dc, ch 1] in each ch-1 space.
  • Join with sl st - (24 shells = 72 dc total)

Repeat Rounds:

  • You can repeat Round 5 and Round 6 alternately as many times as you like to increase the size of your granny square. I have made a total of 10 Rounds and then added the final outer round.
  • Keep alternating until you reach your desired size.
Once your square is the size you want, you can choose to add a final border round for a neat finish.

Optional Final Round:

  • ch1, work 1 dc in every stitch and every ch-1 space around.
  • Make a [3dc, ch2, 3dc] in every corner.
  • Join with a sl st to the first dc - (180 dc total)
  • Make another piece in the same way you made the first one.
