How to Crochet the Lovisa Tote Bag ✨ | Free Step-By-Step Granny Square Crochet Bag Pattern + Tutorial



Hey! 

The Lovisa Tote is a charming, handmade crochet bag made from a mix of heart-shaped granny squares and classic solid granny squares 💖🧶

This bag is as pretty as it is practical, with a playful design that adds a sweet touch to any outfit. The pattern is beginner-friendly, easy to follow, and perfect for anyone looking for a quick, enjoyable project.

Materials:

  • Yarn – Weight-3 acrylic yarn in two colors (approx. 100 grams in total)
  • Hook – 3mm, 3.5 & 4mm hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn Needle
You can use this pattern with any type of yarn with the recommended hook size.


Abbreviations:

  • mr – magic ring
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • trc – treble crochet
  • st(s) – stitch(es)
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • BLO – back loop only


Pattern:

With a 3mm hook.

The Heart Granny Square

Round 1 (In Blue):

  • Start with a magic ring or ch4 and join to form a ring, ch1.
  • [3 dc, ch 2] x 4 into the ring.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc - (4 shells or 12 dc total)

Round 2:

  • Sl st to center of shell, ch 1.
  • In next ch-2 space: 8 dc, ch 1.
  • Sc in next ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • Skip 1 st, [2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc] in central stitch, ch 1.
  • Sc in next ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • 8 dc in last ch-2 space, ch 1.
  • Sl st to center of starting shell.

Round 3 (In White):

Work in BLO (Back Loop Only) for entire Round 3.

  • Join white yarn in a corner ch-1 space.
  • Sc, hdc, dc, trc, ch 2, dc, hdc, sc in next 4 sts,
  • Ch 2, sc in next 4 sts,
  • Hdc into previous round’s center join,
  • Sc in next 4 sts, ch 2, sc in next 4 sts,
  • Hdc, dc, ch 2, trc, dc, hdc, sc.
  • Join with sl st.

Round 4:

  • Ch 1.
  • Dc in every st.
  • In corners: [dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in first and third corners
  • [3 dc, ch 2, dc] in second and fourth corners
  • Join with sl st - (44 dc total)

Round 5:

  • Ch 1.
  • Dc in every st.
  • In each corner: [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]]
  • Join with sl st - (60 dc total)

Repeat Round:

  • You can repeat Round 5 as many times as you like to increase the size of your granny square. I have worked only till Round 5.

The size of the bag (length & width) will be thrice the size of the square.

Now make a total of 10 of these heart granny squares.


The Solid Granny Square

With a 3mm hook.

Round 1 (In Blue):

  • Start with a magic ring or ch4 and join to form a ring, ch1.
  • [3 dc, ch 2] x 4 into the ring.
  • Join with a sl st to the top of the first dc - (4 shells or 12 dc total)

Round 2:

  • ch1 (doesn’t count as a st)
  • dc on top of every dc
  • [2dc, ch2, 2dc] in every corner
  • sl st in the end to join - (28 dc in total)

Round 3:

  • ch1 (doesn’t count as a st)
  • dc on top of every dc
  • [2dc, ch2, 2dc] in every corner
  • sl st in the end to join - (44 dc in total)

Round 4:

  • Repeat Round 3
  • (60 dc in total)
  • Repeat Round:

You can repeat Round 5 as many times as you like to increase the size of your granny square. I have worked only till Round 4.

Make a total of 8 of these solid granny squares.

The number of stitches of the outermost round of both heart and solid granny square should be the same.
