How to Crochet a Daisy String Bookmark 🌼 | Free Detailed Crochet Bookmark Pattern + Tutorial

Hey!

Here's a pattern for a charming and delicate crochet bookmark made of tiny daisy motifs strung together. Each flower features a yellow center with colorful petals, arranged along a crocheted string. Finished with a neat tassel at the end, this bookmark is both functional and decorative, perfect for adding a handmade touch to your favorite books.

There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out here.

Materials:

  • Yarn – Fine yarn in same or two colors
  • Hook – 2.5mm
  • A 1mm hook for weaving in (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker (optional)
  • Yarn needle
  • Sewing Needle
  • Sewing Thread
  • Piece of Cardboard (2 inch wide).
  • You can use this pattern with any type of yarn with the recommended hook size. It is preferable to use a thinner yarn.

Abbreviations:

  • mr – magic ring
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • ch – chain
  • dc – double crochet
  • sc - single crochet
  • sl st – slip stitch

Pattern:

Round 1(In Yellow):

  • Begin with a Magic Ring (or chain 4 and join to form a ring).
  • Make 5 sc into the ring, join with a sl st to the first sc.
  • (5 sc total — you can increase or decrease this number to change petal count.)
  • Ch 1 and fasten off.
  • Pull the ring tight to close the center.

Round 2 (In White):

  • Join yarn in the space where the previous round ended (this hides the join neatly).
  • [Ch 2, 3dc in same stitch, ch 2, sl st in next stitch] — this forms one petal.
  • Repeat the instructions between [ ] around to make 5 petals.
  • After the last petal, join into the first st, then take your hook to the back of the flower, ch 1, and fasten off without leaving a long tail.

Repeat this process to make as many daisy motifs as you want for your bookmark.

Tip: Keep your book beside you and lay the flowers along its length to estimate how many you’ll need.

(For example, 7 daisies worked well for a standard paperback.)

Making the Connecting Chain (String):

  • On the last daisy, after you finish the fifth petal, take the hook to the back as before — but do not fasten off.
  • Begin chaining to form the bookmark string.
    • The length of this chain should match the length of your book (you can measure it directly against the book).
  • Once you’re happy with the length, fasten off, leaving a small tail.

Attaching the Daisies to the String:

After weaving in all loose ends on the back of each flower:

  • Arrange the daisies along the chain next to each other.
  • Pass the chain through two loops on the back of every flower to keep it in place first.
  • Now secure each flower to the chain using fabric glue, hot glue, or sew them on using a needle and thread.
  • Let the glue dry completely if using glue.

Making and Attaching the Tassel:

  • Take a piece of cardboard the size you want your tassel to be (example: 2 inches).
  • Place a small piece of yarn at the top edge (to tie later).
  • Wrap your yarn around the cardboard about 25 times (or as many as needed for desired thickness).
  • Tie the yarn at the top securely, then slide the wrapped yarn off the cardboard carefully.
  • Cut through the loops at the bottom to form the tassel ends.
  • Remove the top tie and tie the same place with the end of the bookmark chain.
  • Take another piece of yarn and tie it around the tassel, about ½ inch below the top, to create the tassel “neck.”
  • Pull the ends of this tie inside the tassel using a crochet hook.
  • Trim the bottom evenly to tidy up the tassel.
  • You can check out the YouTube tutorial, if you have any difficulty with this part.
