How to Crochet the Lian Booksleeve ✨ | Free Pattern & Tutorial
Hey!
The Lian Booksleeve is a cozy and protective crochet project made using pretty, floral-style granny squares that look intricate but are actually very easy to make.
This booksleeve is designed to keep your books safe while adding a handmade, aesthetic touch to your everyday reading routine.
If you love granny squares, bookish crochet projects, or simple patterns that look impressive without being complicated, this is a project you’ll really enjoy making.
There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out here.
Materials:
- Yarn – Weight-2 acrylic yarn in three colors
- 3 colors of your choice (shown here in Dark Pink, Light Pink, and White)
- I am using two strands of the weight-2 yarn held together. You can do the same or use a thicker yarn (like weight-4 yarn)
- Hook – 4mm hook, 5mm hook for joining
- Scissors
Abbreviations:
mr – magic ring
- st/sts – stitch/stitches
- ch – chain
- hdc - half double crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
- sc - single crochet
- hdc - half double crochet
- sp - space
Pattern:
The Square
Round 1 - Center (Dark Pink):
- Start with a magic ring or ch4 and join to form a ring.
- Into the ring: [3 dc, ch 2] — repeat this sequence 4 times to form 4 clusters.
- You’ll have 12 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces.
- sl st to the top of the first dc to join.
- Fasten off Dark Pink.
Join Light Pink yarn into any corner ch-2 space, ch1.
- Work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1] into each corner space around.
- sl st to join.
- You should now have 4 corners and 24 dc total.
The square begins to expand — each corner now forms a “petal cluster.”
Round 3:
- 3 sl st to come to the corner, ch1.
- In the same corner, work [3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 5].
- Repeat this sequence in each corner space around the square.
- sl st to join.
- You’ll have 24 dc and 4 ch-5 spaces total.
The ch-5 spaces create open gaps that will be filled in the next round.
Round 4 (In White):
- Join White yarn into any corner ch-2 space, ch1.
- Work the following sequence all the way around:
- * (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner,
- sc in next 3 sts,
- sc in ch-5 space,
- 2 hdc in the ch-1 space from Round 2
- sc in ch-5 space,
- sc in next 3 sts *
- Repeat this entire sequence between the ** 4 times total.
- You should now have 48 sts around.
- sl st to join
This round shapes your piece into a proper square while smoothing out the edges.
Round 5:
- sl st 2 to come to the corner, ch1.
- In each corner ch-2 space: [dc, ch 2, dc]
- dc in every remaining stitch across the sides.
- sl st to join, ch1, fasten off.
- You’ll finish with 56 dc total.
Your granny square now has a clean, sturdy border ready for joining or use in larger projects.
Adjusting Square Size:
- If your granny square is smaller than the width you want:
- Add one more round:
- dc in every stitch, and
- [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in each corner.
- ch1 and fasten off.
- Add one more round:
- Repeat this extra round as many times as needed until the square reaches the size you prefer.
