How to Crochet the Fernwood Scarf ✨ | Free Crochet Pattern + Tutorial
Hello!
The Fernwood Scarf is a simple yet elegant crochet scarf designed with beginners in mind. This pattern creates a soft, textured fabric that is both cozy and versatile. The subtle color change adds visual interest while keeping the construction easy to follow.
This scarf is worked flat from end to end and can be easily customized in length and color to suit your personal style.
There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out here.

Pattern:
In First Color:
Foundation Chain:
Ch 26 or any chain length, this will be the width of your scarf, mine measures about 15 cms.
Row 1:
- hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in every ch across - (25 hdc)
Row 2:
- ch 1 (not counted as a st), turn.
- hdc in the same st and each st across - (25 dc)
Row 3-8:
- Repeat Row 2
You can repeat the 2nd Row as many times as you want till you feel like you’re ready to change colors. Till Row 8 on my scarf measures 7 cms. You can do it based on measurement or number of rows. Once done, fasten off.
Join the second color.
In Second Color:
Row 9-10:
- Repeat Row 2
Again, you can do more or less rows.
Join the first color.
In First Color:
Row 11-18:
- Repeat Row 2
Do as many rows as you did before with the first color to maintain consistency.
Length Adjustment:
- Continue repeating Row 2
- Alternate colors if desired
- Stop once the scarf reaches your preferred length
At this stage, your scarf is complete and can be used as it is. Tassels are completely optional, but they add a soft, decorative finish. Below are the steps to add tassels if you choose to include them.
- Use the lighter contrast color for a subtle look, or
- Use the main yarn, or
- Alternate between two colors for a playful finish
Tassels:
- Take a piece of cardboard that matches the length you want your tassels to be.
- A straight piece of cardboard gives more consistent results than wrapping around fingers.
- Wrap the yarn around the cardboard about 5 times.
- Wrap more times for thicker tassels, fewer times for thinner ones.
- Cut the yarn and carefully slide the wrapped loops off the cardboard.
- Keep the loops held together so they don’t unravel.
Attaching the Tassels
- Insert your crochet hook into the last stitch on the edge of the scarf (the final half double crochet).
- Place the folded yarn loops on the hook and pull them through the stitch.
- Pull the loop slightly upward, remove the hook, and pass the loose yarn ends through the loop.
- Gently tighten to secure the tassel.
- This completes one tasse
Tassel Placement
- Skip one stitch after each tassel
- Attach tassels to every alternate stitch along the length of the scarf edge
- Continue until the entire side is filled evenly
- Repeat the same process on the other side of the scarf.
Finishing
- Once all tassels are attached, lay the scarf flat
- Trim the tassels evenly for a clean finish
- Adjust length if needed:
- Shorter tassels: trim more
- Longer tassels: use a taller piece of cardboard next time
