How to Crochet the Clara Mesh Top 🌸✨ | Beginner-Friendly Crochet Mesh Top Tutorial | DIY Crochet Top

Hello!

This top is a pretty little mesh design with a touch of bows that make it look so cute! The top is customizable to any size; it is super simple and yet amazingly cute. Plus, you can alter the peek-a-boo sleeves according to your needs!

There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out on this link.

Let's get started!

Materials:

  • Yarn – Weight - 2 (~ 150 grams)
  • Hook – 3mm
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker
  • Yarn Needle
  • Ribbon
  • Thread
  • Measuring Tape
  • Sewing Needle

You can use any yarn with the recommended hook size.

Abbreviations:

  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk st - skip stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp - space
  • rep - Repeat
  • tr/trc – treble crochet
    • Wrap the yarn around your hook two times (you should have 3 loops on your hook).
    • Insert the hook into the stitch/space.
    • Yarn over and pull through the stitch (4 loops on hook).
    • Yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops on your hook (3 loops left).
    • Yarn over and pull through the next 2 loops (2 loops left).
    • Yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.

Pattern

Size Chart & Fit:.

This top is designed with a "drop-shoulder" oversized fit. The mesh is very stretchy but note that it may "pull in" or shrink slightly after the first few rows.

You alter the size based on however wide you want it by altering the foundation chain, but if you aren’t sure, you can refer the size chart for all sizes from XS-XXL in my pdf pattern.

The Panels:

Foundation Chain:

  • Ch 106 (for Size Small)
  • You can make any length, but this should be a multiple of 4+2.
  • This chain will be the width of the top around your waist till below the sleeves.

Row 1:

  • sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across - (105 sc)

Row 2:

  • ch7 (counts as tr + ch3)
  • Turn, *(sk3 sts, tr in next st, ch 3)
  • Rep from * across.

Row 3 - Row 10:

  • Repeat Row 2

The Sleeves:

Row 11 (Extending for Sleeves):

  • At the end of Row 10, ch 102 (96 + 6).
  • This chain length determines the length of the sleeve so you can make any length, but it should be a multiple of 4 + 6
  • Turn, tr in 11th ch from hook
  • *ch 3, sk 3, tr
  • Rep from * across the new chain.
  • Continue the mesh pattern across the top of the body panel (as shown below).

  • At the end of the body, after making the last tr on the body, join a new strand of yarn at the base of the tr (as shown below) and ch96 (or whatever multiple of 4 you chose for the other sleeve).
  • Fasten off the new strand.
  • Continue Row 11 across this second chain: *ch 3, sk 3, tr.

Row 12:

  • ch 7, turn
  • *sk 3, tr in next tr, ch 3
  • Rep across the entire length (Sleeve + Body + Sleeve).

Row 13 - Row 21:

  • Repeat Row 12

The Edging:

  • Sleeve Cuff:
    • After finishing the 21st Row, work 31 sc (or as many you can get to make) evenly across the edge to pull the mesh together.
    • Repeat for the other sleeve by joining yarn to the side of the sleeve.

Assembly and Bow Placement:

Joining:

Place the two panels together (Right Sides facing each other). Sew the bottom side seams and the under-arm sleeve seams.

Shoulder & Bow Markers:

Leave the top of the sleeves and the neck hole open. Use stitch markers on the top edge of the sleeves to mark where the panels will be joined by bows (as shown in the image below):

  • Starting from the cuff, skip 3 mesh boxes, mark the next treble crochet (tr).
  • Skip 7 boxes, mark.
  • Skip 7 boxes, mark.
  • Skip 7 boxes, mark.
  • Skip 4 boxes, mark (this marks the shoulder/neck area).
  • Repeat on the other side.

You can try it on and adjust these markings.

Sew the shoulder part by sewing the 4 boxes right next to the neck opening.

Sew only the top of the marked stitches by individually joining yarn and sewing and then fastening off.

The Bows:

Create approximately 8 bows depending on your spacing.

  • Wrap your ribbon around your index finger twice.
  • Hold your thumb about 2.5 inches away from your index finger.
  • Wrap the ribbon around your thumb, back over your index finger, and repeat once more.
  • Bring the ribbon tail behind the middle of the loops, wrap it over the center, and pull it through the middle to create a tight knot.
  • Slide the bow off your fingers. Tighten the knot and trim the ends at an angle to prevent fraying.
Joining the Bows

Use a needle and thread to sew the bows onto the marked treble crochet stitches, the ones we sew to join the front and back panels together. This creates the "peek-a-boo" open-shoulder look!

I have added 4 bows starting from the cuff.

And you're done!

I'd love to see if you make one of your own.
