How to Crochet the Coraline Bag✨ | Beginner-Friendly Crochet Bag Tutorial + Pattern

Hello!

This beginner-friendly bag features a gorgeous "beachy, sea-side" aesthetic. It is designed to work up incredibly quickly, making it a perfect weekend project. The unique texture is created using the "Drunken Granny" shell stitch, which creates a beautiful zigzag effect.

There is a detailed tutorial for the same on my YouTube Channel which you can check out here.

Materials:

  • Yarn – Fine acrylic yarn in two colors blue and white (approx. 50gms each)
    • You can switch this with a medium weight yarn instead if you want to use only one strand of yarn
  • Hook – 5.5mm hook or the recommended one
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Marker
  • Ribbon (1 cm wide)
You can use any yarn with the recommended hook size.

Abbreviations:

  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • ch – chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • sk st - skip stitch
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch-sp - chain space

Pattern:

With two strands held together

Round 1:

  • Ch 31.
  • Sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until the last ch - (29 sc)
  • In the last ch, work 4 sc. Mark the 2nd and 3rd sc of this 4-sc group with stitch markers.
  • Working down the opposite side of the chain:
    • Sc in each ch across.
  • In the very last ch (the same one you started in), work 3 sc.
  • Mark the last two stitches of this round. Join with a sl st to the first sc.

Round 2:

  • Ch 1.
  • Sc in each st until you reach the first marker.
  • Work 2 sc into each of the 2 marked stitches (4 sc total in that corner).
  • Sc in each st until you reach the next set of markers.
  • Work 2 sc into each of the 2 marked stitches.
  • Join with a sl st to the first sc

Round 3:

  • * Ch 1
  • In the same st as join, work:
    • [1 dc, ch 2, 3 dc]
  • Skip 4 sts.
  • In the 5th st, work:
    • [1 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] *
  • Repeat from * to * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the first dc.

Round 4:

  • * Ch 1, mark this ch, and TURN your work.
  • Identify the first ch-2 space (on your left).
  • In that space, work:
    • [1 dc, ch 2, 3 dc].
  • In the next ch-2 space, work:
    • [1 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] *
  • Repeat from * to * around.
  • Join with a sl st to the marked ch-1.

Round 5:

  • Repeat Round 4, making sure to turn your work at the start of every round.
  • Note: The one I made has 11 rounds of shells (13 rounds total including the base).
  • Turning the work every round is what creates the "zigzag" look of the shells. If you forget to turn, the shells will stack straight instead of leaning!
