Pattern
The Main Body:
We work in rows to create a smooth, sturdy rectangular base.
Foundation Chain:
- Ch 8 + 1 turning chain.
- The 8 chains determine the width, approx. 1.5 inches. You can make more or less chains based on the width you want for your bookmark.
Row 1:
- Sc in the back bump of the 2nd ch from hook (mark this st).
- Sc in each back bump across - (8 sts)
Note: You can work normally if you want instead of working in the back bumps
Row 2:
- Turn.
- sc in the first st and each st across - (8 sts)
Row 3 - 48:
- Repeat Row 2
- Moving your stitch markers up as you go to ensure you don't miss the last stitch.
- Stop when the piece measures approx. 7.5 inches (or your desired length).
Ch1, fasten off.
The Scalloped Border:
- Ch 1, Turn work (facing the inside).
- Work 3 dc into the first space between shells.
- 3 dc in each space between shells around.
- Join with sl st to top of first dc
The Sides: Identify the horizontal "lines" along the edges (created every two rows).
- Step 1: Yarn over, insert hook into the first available space/line on the side.
- Step 2: Work 4 dc in that same space (Shell made).
- Step 3: Sl st into the next available space/line.
- Step 4: Repeat from Step 1 down the entire length of the side.
The Bottom/Top:
- Work a Shell into the corner.
- Skip 1 st, sl st into the next.
- Skip 1 st, work a Shell into the next.
Continue this pattern around all four sides. Join with a sl st to the beginning and fasten off.
The Bow:
Using a smaller hook (2.0 mm) creates a tighter, daintier finish.
- Ch 35 (or enough to reach approx. 4–5 inches).
- Ch 1, tighten, and fasten off.
- Loop the chain into a bow shape.
- Use a small scrap of yarn to tie the center tightly, securing the loops in place. Trim the ends of the chain if they are too long.
The Final Assembly & Finishing:
- Attach the Bow: Place the bow at the top center of the bookmark. Using the yarn tails from the center of the bow, pull them through to the back of the bookmark and tie them securely.
- Weave in Ends: Use your tapestry needle (or a smaller crochet hook) to weave all loose tails into the back of the shell stitches for a clean, invisible finish.
- Blocking: If your bookmark curls slightly, lightly steam it & pin it flat for an while to set the shape.
And with that, you’re done making your Fairytale Bookmark!
I'd love to see if you make one of your own.
