How to Crochet a Flipping Turtle Coaster | Free Step-by-Step Pattern + Video Tutorial
Hello!
Create a playful and functional turtle coaster that flips up every time you keep something on it. This design features a textured shell base with a cute turtle head, limbs, and tail that give the coaster a lively character while still remaining practical for everyday use.

Let's get started!
Materials:
- Yarn – Weight-2 acrylic yarn in two colors (around 50 grams of each)
- Hook – 3mm & 2.5mm hook
- Scissors
- Stitch Markers
- 5mm Safety Eyes
- Hot Glue
- Fiber Fill
You can use this pattern with any type of yarn with the recommended hook size
Abbreviations:
- Chain 1 to start the row.
- Twist the hook and insert it into the previous stitch to the right.
- Grab the yarn with a "yarn under" and pull a loop up to the level of your work.
- Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook.
- Insert your hook into the front loop of the next stitch.
- Insert your hook into the front loop of the following stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on your hook.
- Yarn over again and pull through the remaining two loops to complete the stitch.
Pattern
The Shell:
Use 3mm hook and two strands of yarn held together for a thicker, sturdy base. Ch1 in the beginning of every round does not count as a stitch.
Round 1:
- Start with a magic ring.
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).
- Work 10 dc into the ring.
- Pull ring tight.
- Sl st to first dc to join.
- You should now have 10 dc.
Round 2:
- Ch1
- Work 2dc into every stitch around (increase in each stitch).
- Sl st to join.
- You now have 20 dc.
Round 3:
- Ch 1.
- * [dc, inc]
- Repeat from * around.
- Sl st to join.
- You should have 30 dc.
Round 4:
- Ch 1.
- 1 dc in first stitch.
- 2 dc in next stitch.
- Then work:
- * [dc, dc, inc]
- Repeat from * around.
- 1 dc in final stitch.
- Sl st to join.
- You should have 40 dc.
Round 5:
- Ch 1.
- * [dc, dc, dc, inc]
- Repeat from * around.
- Sl st to join.
- You now have 50 dc.
Round 6:
- Ch 1.
- Work reverse sc (crab stitch) into every stitch around.
- Sl st to finish.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
- This creates a firm, decorative border that helps the coaster hold its shape.
